Sharjah Golf and Shooting clubs newest event and possibly the most popular event on the calendar the International Cup supported by BMW came to a close on Sunday the 20th of Feb. The event had four qualifying rounds with all participants hoping to represent their team in the final. Teams of America, Europe and Africa will battle it out against Asia and The Middle East in a twenty-seven hole Ryder Cup style final. With twenty-four spots in each team up for grabs in the final golfers were delighted to make their respected teams.

With a mixture of members and non-members in both teams and both sides fielding a very strong line up it was almost impossible to name a favourite before the day. Playing 18 holes in the morning the teams played better ball matchplay for their first nine and then on to the tricky foursomes format for the back nine. After the morning eighteen Asia and Middle east had a three-point advantage but with twenty-four points still up for grabs it was very much all still to play for in afternoon singles. Each player faced a nine-hole singles match against their opponents. Half way through the afternoon singles it was looking like it was destined to be a close affair, however the resilience of Asia and Middle East pulled through to claim the 2nd International Cup by a score of 21.5 versus 14.5.

The event and the final day was highly praised by all golfers who are already eager to make sure they secure their spot for next years final. Some great golf was produced on the day and was great to see some real competitiveness but as always played in a wonderful manner.

Winners from the draw were Andrew Thom, Ramli Sulaiman, Abdul Moiz Khan, Fatih Bozkurt and Sunny Ramadas who were all delighted to walk away with pro shop vouchers.

RIGID INDUSTRIES Golf Society League supported by BMW gets underway at SGSC

Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club welcomed back some familiar faces and some new societies for the first round of the Rigid Industries Golf Society League supported by BMW.  A total of fifteen societies from all over the UAE have joined us for this season of GSL all trying to stake their claim to be Rigid Industries Golf Society League Champions. The fifteen societies have been split into three leagues with top two in each league and the best two societies in third place moving into the knock out stages. On Saturday 21st of November twelve societies descended on SGSC trying to get their league campaign off to a fast start.

RIGID LEAGUE

In the Rigid Industries league we saw past winners of the event Filipino Golfers in the Middle East(FIGME) face last years runners up GTI Golf Society in what was set to be a great match. FIGME proved to be too strong for GTI producing some fantastic golf and winning both matches on the day resulting in six points being added to their league total.  The second match up in the league was also set to be a hotly contested affair with GEMS Golf Society playing Team International GS. The teams could not be separated on the day both winning a match and getting off the marks with three points each. White Rose are the fifth society in this league they had a rest week and will be ready to battle in the next round of fixtures.

 WORLDWIDE GOLF LEAGUE

The first match in the Worldwide Golf League saw a new society The Dubai Badgers Golf Society face KEGS Golf Society. The experience of KEGS came out on top winning both matches on the day resulting in a strong start to their campaign.  The other match in the WWG league saw two more new societies battle it out with Dubai Divots Golf Society play Spartans Golf Society again another very close affair as both societies played brilliantly and the end result was a tie both societies winning a match each. Happy Hookers make up the remainder of this league and will join us next month for their first round.

SGSC LEAGUE

Sharjah Night Riders versus the Sultans of Swing kicked off the first round matches in the SGSC league, The Sharjah Night Riders local knowledge resulted in a comfortable win and recorded all six points that were up for grabs. The final match of the day was Nepalese Golf Society face the challenge of the Angry Birdies. This match saw our third tie on the day as both societies could not be separated, both getting off to a steady start and three points to their tally.

All three leagues are set up brilliantly and we can not wait to see how the leagues progress. As well as the matches, competitors had a chance to win day prizes for best betterball stableford score. Congratulations to Rajesh Chitti & Ramli Sulaiman (International GS) on their win in the Day’s prizes from the 21st of November 2020. They both won 150AED pro shop vouchers for their efforts. Some of the best Junior Golfers from all across the UAE battled it out to be this years SGSC Junior Open Champion. With both boys and girls and ages varying from eight to seventeen putting their skills to the test on a course that is in exceptional condition at Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club.

It was the girls that stole the show at this years event with Abu Dhabi Golf Clubs young starlet Chantal El Chaib blowing away the field with a sensational gross four under par sixty eight. Chantal only dropped one shot in her superb round and picked up five birdies in the process. There was the prospect of a play off on the cards as two of the early starters posted one under par seventy one but it wasn’t to be low enough. Taking the runners up spot representing Jumeriah Golf estates was Vigo Sorenson whose was one of the early starters posting seventy one but had to settle for a very credible second place. Kate Bibby from The Els Club took third spot she was first out on the day and she too posted a brilliant score of one under par seventy one only losing out on runners up spot via countback.

In the Net Division young Ties Wolters playing out of Jumeriah Golf estates won with a staggering net score of ten under par sixty two. Bishop holds his nerves to become champion on the 12th SGSC men’s open

12th MEN’S OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
Friday 6th & Saturday 7th December 2019

Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club played host to the 12th Men’s Open Golf Championship on the weekend of the 6th & 7th December. As ever the event was fantastically supported by some of the best golfers from across the UAE, with a mixture of young guns bidding to put their mark on the event & the seasoned master craftsmen of the game.

The weekend event was hotly contested and the course was in fantastic condition and praised by the competitors. Day one saw both Toby Bishop and Dan Byrne come hot out of the blocks & posted impressive scores of one under par seventy one. Toby and Dan were closely followed by some big names including SGSCs very own Nathan Fisher who was a single shot back and EGFs Khalid Yousef just two shots back. Also after a poor first round for his standards defending champion William Ang would feel he wasn’t out of it.

The overnight leaders Toby and Dan were nip and tuck throughout the final round until Dan who plays from the Els club unfortunately dropped a few shots late on and had to settle for fifth place. Toby Bishop representing Trump international Golf Club held his nerve on what was a very close affair, he posted a very solid round of golf level par seventy two. Adding this level par second round to his first round of one under par seventy one saw him finish on one hundred and forty three, which saw him become the 12th SGSC Mens Open Champion. The Third player in the final group chasing his first Mens Open title was SGSC member Nathan Fisher and despite having ten birdies over the weekend dropped too many shots and finished in fourth place one over par. The runner up and third spot came from late charges from probably the pre-tournament favorites William Ang and Josh Hill. William was three under for his last four holes to post the best round of the weekend five under par sixty six for a level par total and runners up spot.  It was a similar story for Josh representing Trump International who posted four under par and equaling Williams total only losing out to second place via countback.

Dan Bryne (TEC) picked up the trophy for Day one’s best score with a score of seventy one. The Day two best score went to Gordon Munro representing Dubai hills Golf Club as he posted seventy two level par.

The first place net was won by a visitor all the way from San Francisco who said he had the weekend of his golfing life with a staggering net total of fourteen under par winning by a massive twelve strokes. Runner up went to SGSC member Mohan GC who had a very solid weekend of golf finishing on a net total of two under par. Third place went to SGSC member Ravi AE. Picking up the best day one net score was Edoardo Scialanga with a score of seventy one for the emirates golf club member.  The day two best score went to Sharjah Golf & Shooting club member Namir Al Naimi as he showed his experience around the course to post a level par seventy two.

The event was played in a great spirit and a record number of competitors for the SGSC Mens Open and was highly competitive all the way to the last putt.
